I have been a consistent advocate for our youth. I established a teen council years ago to give young people an opportunity to discuss and present their ideas to the City Council. More recently I have advocated for American Rescue Plan Act funds for our Teen Center. I also advocated with our state representatives to ensure financing for the Center. The financing has recently been approved. The Center will provide a safe space for youth to develop computer skills, receive tutoring, and engage in other productive activities. The viability of the Teen Center is critical because the COVID pandemic has affected learning and, in some cases, the stability of young people’s homes. During the day, the center can be utilized by seniors to learn computer skills. As a founding member of Hyattsville Aging in Place, I was delighted to assist that organization to obtain a recent grant to continue its work. I will continue and expand upon these efforts for all of you.
I worked in collaboration with the Hyattsville Preservation Association, City staff, and others to advocate in the Council for the name change of Magruder Park to Driskell Park. I have worked with the Driskell family and the City staff to conceptualize a new vision for the park.
I have advocated for communication and understanding across cultural divides. More than 15 years ago, I founded the Bridging Cultural Gaps Book Club; and, after a hiatus due to COVID, we have resumed monthly meetings. Through Book Club discussions, we have formed new friendships. Our diversity has enlightened us, helped us listen to other points of view, and enhanced our understanding of one another. Our community is stronger because of these interactions and bonds.

I care about supporting those who are in need in Hyattsville. I will dedicate my efforts to maintaining our forward momentum without leaving anyone behind. We all agree that City residents want to be safe, build wealth, educate their children, and plan for a secure future. We need a tax plan that will provide relief for those who are most in need, and I will work to that end.
There are many exciting initiatives that our City staff has developed to incorporate sustainability projects to move us toward zero waste. The City arborist has a plan for increasing our tree canopy. The City is improving bicycle and pedestrian safety and finding new ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Our Department of Public Works is constantly researching and implementing pilot programs. Curbside composting, expanded citywide, is a prime example. Another program, increasing the use of electric vehicles and equipment, is also moving us closer to zero waste. As we introduce new programs, we must always do the necessary research and analysis, determine feasibility, and exercise fiscal responsibility to ensure that the city remains solvent into the future.
As the Hyattsville community we have grown in so many positive ways. I look forward to continuing to serve you all in this new mayoral role as we take on new challenges.
